January 26: Bulgogi House

Dining Out, Food, Project Food 2015

Despite my attempts at staying healthy and eating right, Chris really wanted all-you-can-eat Korean BBQ and since I know he had a long day I agreed.  We went to a new spot called Bulgogi House.

We’ve been here once before and were pleasantly surprised by the amazing service.  We tried coming before but the wait was too ridiculous.  Thankfully they were very accommodating of us this time around.  There’s a premium  and a deluxe menu.  The Premium Menu comes with 12 additional options for grilling while Deluxe Menu still has a hefty 30+ options.

Sweet Sauce, Oil and Salt, Chili and Buffet Sides

Bulgogi House’s big draw that sets it apart from many other AYCE KBBQ is the buffet banchan (sides).  They have a huge selection of radish wraps, various kimchis, jalapenos, an assortment of veggies, fried rice, fried, chicken, sushi, miso, rice, desserts and so much more.

Jalapenos, Potato Salad, Bomb Fried Rice, Yummy Kimchi

This place really does have everything you could want from a KBBQ restaurant except for the egg soup and the Korean pancakes.

They admit that their servings of meat are smaller than most places but that’s because they want their customers to be able to try everything on their expansive menu.  The servers are very helpful and do their best to accommodate guests and their wants.

The only downside about this place is when the bill comes and you realize you just paid roughly $60 for dinner for two.  This place really has a lot to offer but I couldn’t justify coming here more than once every three months.  It was a good night filled with good food, but ’til next year Bulgogi House!

January 25: Sunrise Cafe

Dining Out, Food, Project Food 2015

We had to wake up early for another Sunday morning of work and were hungry.  We decided to stop by a place that was on the way to where we were going so we swung by a place I had bookmarked on yelp.
http://www.yelp.com/biz/sunrise-caf%C3%A8-buena-park

I became a little wary after realizing it was in the same complex as Spencer’s Italian Bistro, just a few doors down.  I almost got it confused with the Mexican restaurant next to it–not because I don’t like Mexican food but because Chris doesn’t.  We found the entrance and were prompted to seat ourselves.  We picked a nice booth a perused the menu.

It was a typical American breakfast joint with eggs, bacon, pancakes, hashbrowns, etc.  The only twist was that it was run–apparently–by a family of Asians.  They came and took our orders–a little sloppily because two people came to check to see if we wanted anything to drink.  That kind of thing never bothers me because it seems like everyone is being courteous and catering to us but I can see how it would reflect a lack of communication.

Regardless, everyone was very nice and we ordered Orange Juice and water.  I got a French Dip which came with a Soup (clam chowder) and a side of zucchini fries.  I had gotten zucchini fries with my brother before and they were pretty good.  Chris just ordered Banana Pancakes and we waited for our food.

Clam Chowder

Clam Chowder

The Clam Chowder tasted like it came out of a can but it was hot and the clams were tender so I wasn’t complaining that much.  The fried zucchini was clearly frozen and didn’t taste anything like the ones I had gotten with my brother so that was a disappointment.

Fried Zucchini Rounds

Chris really liked his banana pancakes so I was glad for that.  My french dip was a little lacking for my tastes.  Preparation-wise the meat was too centered and not evenly distributed enough.  The au jous was delicious and hot so that was a plus and the bun was doughy soft which was great.  Unfortunately I regretted ordering the French Dip but at least Chris enjoyed it!

French Dip and Au Jus

Alas, not my favorite breakfast spot.  But sometimes I think breakfast foods are way too heavy for me.  Just give me a little oatmeal and almond milk and I’ll be happy.  Either way, this was a whim I’ll consider a win since Chris liked it.  ‘Til next year, Sunrise Cafe!

January 24: Irori Japanese Restaurant

Dining Out, Food, Healthy Living, Project Food 2015

World of WordPress…let me proudly introduce you to my favorite Japanese Sushi restaurant in all of Los Angeles, California, and likely the world.  Irori.
http://irorisushi.com/

Not only does this restaurant have a soft spot in my heart because it was the first restaurant that Chris took me to for a date, but it has consistently outshone all other Japanese restaurants I have ever been to, including when I visited Tokyo.

Now I know that there are certainly sushi “purists” out there that say that sushi isn’t “traditional” or “good enough” unless it’s prepared by a Japanese person and all I have to say to them is: Haters gonna hate.  If a Korean man working behind a sushi bar and trying to speak Japanese for your sake of an immersive experience AND makes delicious sushi on top of it, then what right do you have to complain about it?
(The above rant was brought to you by haters on yelp.)

ANYWAY!  Irori has been my favorite sushi restaurant for about a year…or ever since I was introduced to it.  Much like the name (if translated) implies, you get an almost authentic Japanese dining experience at this restaurant.  When you walk in you are prompted to remove your shoes and place them in the provided cubbies before setting foot into the main dining area of the restaurant.  Germaphobes have no fear!  You are provided with optional disposable socks if you don’t want your bare feet touching the ground.

After your shoes are removed a server will then guide you to your seat–you have the option of sitting at a table or at the sushi bar.  All the seats in the restaurant are “irori style”.  The word Irori refers to Japanese table/chair style where seats go inside the floor and creates a sitting-on-the-floor effect with much more comfort.  So you can feel traditional like you’re sitting on the floor without any of the numb legs.  Chris and I prefer to sit and watch the chefs work in the sushi bar.  A fun tip if you ever visit this place, if you sit at the bar they’ll give you a free amuse bouche.  For the past few months its been a small sample of their tuna, salmon, albacore and one other type of fish that I’m not sure of drizzled with a sweet yellow sauce.

We ordered our usuals–Fatty Tuna, Bluefin Tuna, Salmon and an Irori Roll.  To change things up a little bit we also ordered a California Roll (Chris), Baked Lobster Rolle (me), Albacore Special, and an Uni (Sea Urchin) Shooter.

The Fatty Tuna is my absolute favorite cut of any fish that I’ve ever tried.  Before Chris took me here I had never tried it before but now I can never come here without ordering it.  I almost ordered two this time around.  It is the most amazing flavor and texture of melt-in-your-mouth goodness that I have ever had the pleasure of trying.  And even the Bluefin Tuna which we don’t always get was phenomenally tender.  My mouth is watering just remembering it.

Front Bluefin Tuna, Back Fatty Tuna

You can tell a lot about a place based on the quality of their California Roll and for whatever reason, Chris felt like ordering a California Roll that did not disappoint!  Unlike most places, the rice to crab to veggie ratio was perfect.  I feel like usually people put way too much rice–that did not happen at Irori.  I was even telling Chris they might actually use real crab as opposed to imitation crab and they didn’t skimp on the avocado.

California Roll: Cucumber, Avocado, Crab Meat

Chris’ favorite roll is the Irori Roll.  It’s made with avocado, cucumber, a bit of other vegetation, and Bluefin tuna.  It’s also topped with deep fried crispy onion strings!

Irori Roll

The Albacore Special which is albacore sashimi in a yuzu/ponzu-ish sauce with thinner shoestring onions is melt-in-your-mouth good!  It was actually much softer than the toro with a smoother flavor.  When I tried it for the first time I had a hard time processing what had just happened.  My tastebuds were not prepared for it but they sure enjoyed it a lot!.

I have had baked rolls before…but for some reason I just really wanted to try Irori’s version, knowing that they could do no worse than the baked rolls I’ve had previously and Salmon was on my mind.  I was rewarded for my risk!  It was delicious!!  I didn’t know what was inside, it was either crab or some other kind of fish, but on top was the most amazing baked salmon topped with not-too-much mayonnaise and baked to perfection.  And you can even see for yourself how beautifully garnished everything is.

I always used to get salmon (sake) sashimi at my old favorite sushi place but for some reason after finding this place thought that it was too low-brow for me to order.  Until one day when we took Chris’ best friend here and he ordered 5 orders of it and we tried it and fell in love all over again.  I should have known that a higher quality restaurant would result in higher quality salmon.

The only thing I forgot to take a picture of was the Uni (sea urchin) shooter because I was just so excited and eager to drink it.  But I have supplemented it with a picture of two Uni Shooters from mine and Chris’ second day at Irori.  A sea urchin shooter is very similar to an oyster shooter except for that–as far as I know–there’s no alcohol in it.  Which is perfectly fine for me because even in my oyster shooters I feel like the vodka ruins it.  Uni shooters are prepared with masago (fish eggs), lemon, ponzu, a quail egg, and garnished with a carrot.  It’s a very strong and distinct taste and texture that is not for the feint of stomach, but for those who are brave, your daring will be rewarded!!

I am obviously in love with Irori and am loathe to leave it for a whole rest of the year!!  Alas, I must…or I’ll just keep coming here as an exception to maintain my “regular” status.  We’ll see what happens when my next sushi craving strikes.  Parting from here is such sweet sorrow…alas…’til next time, Irori!

January 23: Yasai Japanese Grill

Dining Out, Food, Project Food 2015

Going along with his usual cravings, Chris wanted either short-ribs (Kalbi) or another Beef Bowl.  Since he just wanted me to pick something up and bring it home I didn’t want to waste  a good pick so I went with Yasai.  It’s one of my mom and brother’s favorite little Japanese spots and I figured it would do the job for dinner on Friday.
http://www.yelp.com/biz/yasai-japanese-grill-cerritos

I wasn’t quite in the same beef-bowl mood that Chris was so while I ordered him the regular Beef Teriyaki Bowl, I got myself a Hot Night Roll, already bracing myself knowing that ordering sushi from a fastfood type Japanese place wouldn’t be the best idea.

I got home and realized they gave us a complimentary Miso Soup and was pleasantly surprised.  The food was as good as expected–average.  It wasn’t amazing but it wasn’t terrible or bad by any means.  Chris still didn’t like it as much as the two places we had before, but then again I didn’t really expect him to.

He didn’t finish his bowl but together we took down my hot night roll and overall had a good meal.  ‘Til next year, Yasai!

January 19: Koo Koo Teriyaki

Dining Out, Food, Project Food 2015

So I have a number of places bookmarked on my yelp account.  Sometimes when I’m bored I’ll just browse around and hope that I find a good spot and I’ll bookmark it for future dining.  This is how me and Chris ended up at Koo Koo Teriyaki on Monday night after our day at the Huntington Library.
http://www.kookoogrill.net/

The food is okay.  One of Chris’ favorite foods is a good teriyaki bowl and thanks to our visit to Golden Bowl, he has moved on from Chicken to Beef.  So he ordered a Teriyaki Beef Bowl and just to be different I got Beef Tacos, which it looked like they were known for.  We got a side of fries on top of everything else.

The food was decent but I think Chris liked Golden Bowl better.  The fries were kind of bad when we at them in the car.  They tasted plain to Chris and grainy to me, but oddly enough the more he ate, the better he said they tasted.

I won’t miss this place much for the rest of the year.  ‘Til next year, Koo Koo Grill!

January 17: Five Guys

Dining Out, Food, Project Food 2015

I dragged Chris along with me for an open house that I had on Saturday and by the time we were finished we were beat and hungry!  Since we were way outside of home we decided to look up a place and originally were going to go to Mad Greek but we kept talking about how awesome it would be to grill up some burgers at home and one thing led to another and we found ourselves at the closest Five Guys to us.

http://www.fiveguys.com/home2014/index_us.html

I have been to Five Guys maybe a handful of times.  The first time I went there was in the summer of 2008.  I tried it while I was in Washington DC and I had never heard of it before and didn’t know that it was allegedly the East Coast In-N-Out.  I personally thought that it was good…but a little too messy for my liking.  But they did give a ridiculous serving of fries.

IMG_9323

Since then I’ve been back to a restaurant and learned that Five Guys is popular because of their options and customizability.  This day I decided to get a Little Bacon Burger with lettuce, tomatoes, jalepenos, pickles and hot sauce on the side.  I ordered no cheese, but they put some anyway.  I didn’t care enough to ask them to fix it.  Also, the “Little” just means that you get one patty instead of two.  It’s not smaller by circumference.

IMG_9325

Chris ordered a Bacon Cheeseburger with A1 and grilled onions and a Medium Fries despite my protests for a large.

IMG_9320

We were both very satisfied and even though I claim otherwise, we had plenty of fries left over with the medium order that we got.  Chris reminded me that not only do they fill the medium sized cup, but they also fill half the bag with overflow fries.

IMG_9318

I can almost smell the fries just looking at this picture.

My only complaint, and it’s a minor one at that, is that they don’t serve ranch in their restaurant at all.  But I guess it’s all part of the experience.  Oh well.  All in all I had a good experience with Five Guys this time around.  Sadly, we won’t be seeing each other for a while.  ‘Til next year, Five Guys!

January 14: Lemon Butter Chicken

Dining In, Food, Healthy Living, Project Food 2015

Since Chris always talks about how he wants to be with someone who can cook, and that’s something I want to be able to do for myself and any future children I have, I tried my hand at cooking something new today.  I found a recipe online for a Lemon Butter Chicken recipe that sounded tasty and easy.

http://damndelicious.net/2014/12/31/lemon-butter-chicken/

I went to the grocery store after I got off work and bought all the ingredients, including spices, since I was going to be cooking it in Chris’ apartment and I really don’t remember what he has stocked up there.  To my happy surprise, the total for all the ingredients was around $25–way less than I was expecting.

I put everything together and made the sauce.  I only made half a serving but forgot to adjust for the sauce so it came out more of a soup…which really I had no problem with because it was so good on its own!

IMG_9309

I made four large skin-on chicken thighs with the spinach in the sauce and seasoned appropriately with salt, pepper, and paprika.

The chicken didn’t come out as crispy as I wish the skin had been but the sauce more than made up for everything else that was lacking!

I was very, very satisfied with how this came out!  And Chris said it was good too!  We talked about maybe next time cutting up the chicken into smaller pieces and making a type of stew in with the sauce.  I hope to revisit this recipe again and improve my cooking!

January 13: Chick-fil-A?

Dining Out, Food, Project Food 2015

I’m not too sure if this counts for a meal shared between the two of us.  I was trying a new workout with a friend so Chris was on his own for dinner and ended up getting Chick-Fil-A.  Thankfully he picked me up some food too.
http://www.chick-fil-a.com/
He got himself a Classic Chicken Sandwich with no pickles…which ended up coming with pickles anyway and CrissCut fries.  He ordered me the Deluxe Spicy Chicken Sandwich also with CrissCut fries.  I was desperately starving by the time I got out of class so was so grateful to have food ready and waiting for me.

<<No pictures today.  Was too hungry.>>

It wasn’t hot anymore by the time I got to it but it didn’t even matter.  I was ravenous and Chick-fil-A hit the spot.  I’m not sure if this counts as a meal since we didn’t eat together, we just both had Chick-fil-A for a dinner-ish meal.  We’ll see in the future.  Til next time Chick-fil-A.

January 12: Piknic

Dining Out, Food, Project Food 2015

Chris decided to surprise me when I got out of my yoga class and we went to a nearby restaurant called Piknic.
http://www.piknicplayavista.com/
We had gone there early last year when we first started dating and he always gave me a hard time because he swooore I hated it but I was really just full from a big lunch I had had.  I was glad we were back to give it another try.  If they have one thing going for them it’s definitely the ambiance.  The dim lighting, waterfall wall, and maple leave lights create a very calming and intimate mood.

The complimentary bread that came out was pretty and yummy.  There were two types of bread.  One tasted like a baguette and the other was more of a rye with dried cranberries in it.  Both went very well with the oil-based dipping sauce that came with it.

Complimentary Bread and Sauce

Complimentary Bread and Sauce, 3/5

We ordered Fried Calamari to start things off.  It came out very quickly and was everything you would expect from fried calamari in all the good ways.  It was crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside with a lemon on the side to add that extra kick if you like it.  Their marinara was the right kind of spicy that really enhanced the food experience.

Fried Calamari 5/5

Fried Calamari, 5/5

For an entree I was going to order a Chicken Caesar Salad to try and be healthy after working out but Chris convinced me to try the fish.  I was going to order Swordfish because as far as I recall, I haven’t tried it yet.  Alas, they were out of swordfish so I downgraded to the Blackened Barramundi.  It came out and was plated beautifully with mango salsa atop the seasoned fish surrounded with potatoes.  They had come out earlier and told me they ran out of the purple potatoes they typically serve the dish with and were going to substitute golden potatoes.  I was only a little disappointed about that loss because I don’t think I’ve had those kinds of potatoes before either.  Bit of a bummer again but I remained ever the optimist.

Blackened Barramundi

Blackened Barramundi, 3/5

Tastewise it was ok.  The fish was not as tender as I was hoping it would be and I was confused if I kept biting into skin that I wasn’t supposed to eat or if that was just a tougher part of the fish.  As far as the seasoning goes, it was nice, not too bland, which is more than I can say about the potatoes.  I don’t know if the purple potatoes would have had more of a flavor of their own but the golden potatoes that accompanied my meal were a little lacking in my opinion.  The saving grace for me was the artichoke hearts I found mixed in the with baby bok choy underneath the fish filet.  Artichoke has a very pleasant flavor that I wasn’t expecting but was glad I encountered.  I would not order Barramundi again, from Piknics, or anywhere else.  I think it’s just not the fish for me.

Chris ordered the Build Your Own Burger and unfortunately I was not listening when he did, but looks like he ordered avocado, onion strings, bacon, Swiss cheese and the typical greens.  His burger was served with a side of sweet potato fries and came with a separate plate of condiments for his liking.

Build Your Own Burger

Build Your Own Burger

It was a good burger that came out hot and fresh and I definitely kept picking at his plate throughout the night.  He couldn’t finish it because he has a small stomach, but I gladly took the rest home for my lunch the next day.

I really want to give Piknic’s another go, but I’m in no rush to hurry back.  Our dining experience was not lacking in any way but there was just something about it that doesn’t blow me away.  Hopefully I can figure it out, but I won’t need to anytime soon.  Thanks for a pleasant evening and ’til next year Piknic!
