We were on a bit of a time crunch so for lunch we just settled on L&L Hawaiian BBQ a restaurant that we usually dine at and that my family often has cater.
This restaurant was originally started on Hawaii and has since been sharing the wonders of Hawaiian cuisine with us mainland folk. Ever since one moved into town I have been going to L&L with family and friends to get spam musubis, mini chicken katsus, or even burgers and fries.
On this particular trip in 2015, we ordered:
1) Cream Cheese Wontons (which I think are new)
2) Mini Chicken Katsu (me)
3) Hawaiian BBQ Chicken (Chris)
The wait is pretty average, maybe 10ish minutes before our food was ready. The cream cheese wontons were okay. They came with this interesting raspberry sauce that I had never encountered before. To taste, there was a lot of wrap to get through and very little cream cheese. The ratios were just off. Not horrible, and they could do in a pinch…or if someone had some that they didn’t want to finish but I doubt I’d ever order these for myself again.
My Mini Chicken Katsu on the other hand was fantastic! It was fresh out of the oven or fryer or whatever they use to cook chicken katsu and it was hot, crunchy, and delicious. Even Chris wanted a few bites. The rice and macaroni salad that come with the mini meal were good as usual. The rice is soft and sticky instead of dry and hard and the macaroni salad added a subtle flavor with perfectly cooked macaroni. L&Ls will be sorely missed by the end of the year.
Hawaiian BBQ Chicken. What can I say about it? It’s not a personal favorite of mine but Chris finished the entire thing so I think it’s safe to say that it was good. The closest thing I can compare it to would be Japanese style chicken teriyaki but with Hawaiian flavors? I know I said it’s not my favorite but it’s by no means something I wouldn’t eat. Call me crazy, I just prefer all things fried over anything grilled.
Their regular sized meals are honestly big enough to feed two people with regular appetites or three-four people with small appetites. No one can accuse L&L of skimping on their portion sizes.
It might not have been exactly what we were craving when were trying to pick a place to eat, but L&L is a very safe default for any meal. But maybe it’s good that we knocked this one out early in the year so we can keep exploring new restaurants and new flavors. You’ve been so good to us, but ’til next year L&L!
