January 25: Sunrise Cafe

Dining Out, Food, Project Food 2015

We had to wake up early for another Sunday morning of work and were hungry.  We decided to stop by a place that was on the way to where we were going so we swung by a place I had bookmarked on yelp.

I became a little wary after realizing it was in the same complex as Spencer’s Italian Bistro, just a few doors down.  I almost got it confused with the Mexican restaurant next to it–not because I don’t like Mexican food but because Chris doesn’t.  We found the entrance and were prompted to seat ourselves.  We picked a nice booth a perused the menu.

It was a typical American breakfast joint with eggs, bacon, pancakes, hashbrowns, etc.  The only twist was that it was run–apparently–by a family of Asians.  They came and took our orders–a little sloppily because two people came to check to see if we wanted anything to drink.  That kind of thing never bothers me because it seems like everyone is being courteous and catering to us but I can see how it would reflect a lack of communication.

Regardless, everyone was very nice and we ordered Orange Juice and water.  I got a French Dip which came with a Soup (clam chowder) and a side of zucchini fries.  I had gotten zucchini fries with my brother before and they were pretty good.  Chris just ordered Banana Pancakes and we waited for our food.

Clam Chowder

The Clam Chowder tasted like it came out of a can but it was hot and the clams were tender so I wasn’t complaining that much.  The fried zucchini was clearly frozen and didn’t taste anything like the ones I had gotten with my brother so that was a disappointment.

Chris really liked his banana pancakes so I was glad for that.  My french dip was a little lacking for my tastes.  Preparation-wise the meat was too centered and not evenly distributed enough.  The au jous was delicious and hot so that was a plus and the bun was doughy soft which was great.  Unfortunately I regretted ordering the French Dip but at least Chris enjoyed it!

Alas, not my favorite breakfast spot.  But sometimes I think breakfast foods are way too heavy for me.  Just give me a little oatmeal and almond milk and I’ll be happy.  Either way, this was a whim I’ll consider a win since Chris liked it.  ‘Til next year, Sunrise Cafe!
